CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

When Elidad and Aiden reached the landing, they found a single torch burning on a pedestal, just as Elidad anticipated. The handle was gold with mirrored pieces inlaid around all sides of it. It was just as beautiful as its twin on the landing under Isaac’s shop.

How many rooms were there like the one beneath Isaac’s shop? She never considered there could be others.

As Elidad looked up at the torch burning brightly, Aiden circled around the landing to inspect the torch and its pedestal.

“It’s beautiful,” he said, not taking his eyes off the stunning artifact.

“Yes, it is.” Elidad always thought so.

Aiden turned to look over the edge of the landing. “It keeps going, doesn’t it? Where do you think it ends?”

“I’m not sure,” Elidad answered truthfully.

“The problem is, Elidad, once we go down, we’re going to have to walk back up.”

Elidad smiled. She’d never thought of the severity of that before. Once Abraham warned her not to follow the stairs down, she never considered it again. But Aiden was right: it would be a treacherous climb back up.

The stairs appeared to go on into oblivion. If someone chose to take that walk, perhaps the most severe punishment would be to have to walk back up, but she doubted it. She remembered the tone of Abraham’s voice when he told her, “I pray, child, you will never have to know.” Elidad shuddered at the memory.

“I don’t think we have to worry about what’s down there just yet,” she told Aiden as she took the torch from its stand.

“Change your mind, then?” he asked, making his way to the stairs to go back up to the church.

“Nope,” she answered, holding the torch over the edge of the landing.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” she answered as she released the torch over the ledge. In the last second of light, when the torch fell away to be devoured by darkness, she could see Aiden’s face. She had to cover her mouth to suppress a giggle.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Aiden asked frantically.

“What did it look like? I threw the torch over the edge,” she answered matter-of-factly.

“Well, that was obvious. What isn’t obvious is why. How in God’s name will we find our way out of here now?”

“Be patient, Priest. Take a breath.” Elidad was enjoying herself at his expense.

She was confident things would work the same way they worked under Isaac’s shop. She knew it was cruel not to inform him, but it was good for Aiden. He needed to harden up.

The torch caught fire in its stand just as she knew it would. Her mischievous smile flickered at Aiden in the dancing light.

He stared at her in disbelief. “How did you know?”

She shrugged. “I just did.” Elidad walked past him to enter the long hall that materialized in the absence of light. Elidad didn’t need to turn to face Aiden to know the look of surprise on his face when he realized the hall appeared in the new torch light.
